Kathryn Lawless last saw Elizabeth Killingsworth alive during lunch. Around 4:00 PM, she quickly drove back to the library and checked out a copy of Dr. Chelsea Barren’s last book. Soon afterwards, she was sitting on Killingsworth Farm’s back porch reading the book and waiting for Elizabeth to finish showing Michael Nightshade around the farm. Elizabeth never returned.
At around 6:45 PM, Kathryn noticed Dr. Chelsea Barren come from her house next door. Dr. Barren followed someone into the wine vaults. Moments later, the lights in the window of the wine vaults flicker and went out.
Secret Clue #5
Letter found by Kathryn next to Elizabeth’s body.
Written on Killingsworth Farm letterhead dated today:
Dearest Kathryn,
As you know, times have been hard since Robert’s death. I struggle each day to find the strength to go on. The thought of selling my home – Killingsworth Farm – is too much to bear, but as you know, I can no longer afford the farm’s upkeep – let alone wine production.
I am lost. I am alone. Tonight, when I fall asleep, I do not plan to see the morning – my sleeping pills should ensure that I never awake.
You have been so good to Robert and I this last year, and you are truly my best friend. I want you to have Killingsworth Farm. Run it, sell it, or do with it whatever makes you happy.
With Heartfelt Gratitude,
-Elizabeth Killingsworth
At 2:15 PM, Michael Nightshade’s Aunt Kathryn snuck out to his car with a bottle of sleeping pills. She told him to crush them and keep them in his pocket. If Elizabeth Killingsworth refused to sell the farm to him, he was to slip them in her drink the first chance he could get. Michael demanded that his Aunt Kathryn tell him why she wanted him to pretend to be a real estate developer to try and buy the Killingsworth Farm cheaply. Kathryn told him a story of gold buried on the land worth millions. Her plans to obtain the land seemed deranged, but she kept saying that she was desperate to leave this small town and promised him a nice profit from the deal.
Michael Nightshade met with Elizabeth Killingsworth again at 5:15pm. Together, they found a cozy corner in the wine vaults to sample various wines and discuss the sale of Killingsworth Farm. They were still drinking together when the lights flickered and went out. They heard someone scream from the other end of the wine vaults. Elizabeth Killingsworth told Michael to wait there while she went and investigated. That was the last time he saw her alive.
