Personality Disorders: Diagnosis & Treatment for Therapeutic Progress
Presented by David Mays, MD, PhD

This is a two-day, virtual opportunity.

When: Wednesday, December 7, 2022 & Thursday, December 8, 2022

10:00 AM – 12:00 PM CDT  Each Day

Workshop DescriptionSome behavior patterns consistently confound and provoke. Clinicians often feel helpless and frustrated as they try to help clients and families who are locked in endless interpersonal conflict. Studies consistently show that medications and psychotherapy will not change people who blame their difficulties on everyone but themselves. High drama, hostile dependence, and intimidation all increase the risk for boundary crossings and poor outcomes.

This training begins with the assumption that you can’t manage what you can’t understand, and presents a simple approach for distinguishing the personality disorders – the notion that each disorder has a unique interpersonal agenda that is repeated over and over interactions with others. This knowledge can help the clinician recognize what is happening in the therapy/family system. It may then be possible to move beyond the impasse that is impeding therapeutic progress.

The workshop will focus on the following topics:

  • Attachment and attachment patterns – the agendas of the personality disorders
  • The ten personality disorders – briefly
  • Borderline, antisocial, and narcissistic personality – in depth
  • Transference, boundary and safety issues
  • Treatment, management, medication, and modest goals

Learning ObjectivesAt the end of this training, participants will…

  1. Be able to describe the primary agendas of borderline, antisocial and narcissistic personality
  2. Be familiar with ways of dealing with suicide risk in borderline personality
  1. Discuss the common boundary traps that occur with these three disorders
  1. Be introduced to the most recent evidence-based care for these disorders
