A recent Speak Out asked whether we could create a procedure for employees to “sell back” unused vacation time. We understand that as the end of the year approaches, some employees may find it difficult to take time off due to program needs or scheduling conflicts.
The short answer, however, is no—we don’t plan to establish a vacation buyback option. And the reason is simple: we truly want you to use your vacation! Time off is essential for rest, recovery, and balance. The goal is to plan ahead so you can enjoy both your work and your personal time throughout the year.
Of course, that’s often easier said than done. If you reach November or December with a large vacation balance, it can be tough to find time to use it. That’s why it’s so important to schedule time off earlier in the year. And remember—vacation doesn’t have to mean travel! Even if a trip isn’t in the cards, a staycation can be just as refreshing. Spend time with family or friends, take a day trip, explore a nearby park, or simply relax at home.
For those who’ve been with us a while, you may recall that we doubled the amount of vacation hours you can carry over to help address this issue. Full-time employees can now carry over up to 80 hours, and part-time employees up to 40 hours. Thanks to that change—and your efforts to plan time off throughout the year—unused vacation balances have decreased significantly.
Let’s keep that momentum going! Please continue making time for yourself and using your well-earned vacation throughout the year.
