An employee submitted a Speak Out recently sharing their opposing perspective on our Vacation Policy. I truly appreciate that someone took the time to express their thoughts and contribute to the discussion. Open feedback helps us see where our policies may create challenges for staff, and I value hearing those viewpoints.
The main concern raised was that it can sometimes be difficult to use vacation time due to program needs, and that work may pile up while someone is away, making time off more stressful. These are valid concerns, and it’s important that we continue finding ways to make taking time off as manageable as possible.
As mentioned previously, planning ahead—especially for longer vacations—can often help make it easier to take time away. It can also help to talk with your supervisor and team members ahead of time to ensure coverage and ease any concerns about workload.
Bottom line, if you’re finding it hard to use your vacation time, please reach out to your supervisor—or to me—so we can problem-solve together. Our goal is to help you take and enjoy your earned time off rather than feel the need to sell it back.
