Red Ribbon Week 2016

redribbonweek

The National Family Partnership (NFP) is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1980. Their efforts were focused on educating youth on drugs and drug prevention. The NFP networks with over 90 partners to increase drug prevention. In 1988, they sponsored the first National Red Ribbon Week. This campaign started in response to the death of a DEA agent to raise awareness of death caused by drugs. Today, they continue their education to communities to get youth involved in drug prevention activities.

The Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) was created in 2012. Live Well Winona collaborated with a representative from Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center to create a community based coalition to reduce local substance abuse problems. ASAP applied for the Drug Free Community Support Program grant. On September 4, 2015 ASAP was awarded a 5 year grant of $532,974. FCC is represented on the Board of Directors for the Youth Serving Organization sector.

FCC is proud to partner with ASAP and participate in this year Red Ribbon Week Campaign. The 2016 theme is YOLO, You Only Live Once. The theme was created by two sixth graders from Claysburg Kimmel Elementary school in Claysburg, Pennsylvania. The theme reminds youth that you only live once and to make good decisions. Red Ribbon Week runs from October 23-31. FCC’s day treatment programs in Winona are participating in the campaign by having a coloring contest. There are three coloring sheets depicting drug prevention that the youth can choose from. There will be prizes for the top coloring sheets from each program. There will also be red ribbons for staff to wear available at the front desk in Winona. We hope our partnership with ASAP and our participation in Red Ribbon Week will increase awareness of the impact of drugs and increase education with the youth we serve.
