After a number of frustrating weeks, we will finally be getting a new phone system at GVC. As you know, this location has been without a voicemail function since the system broke, and we have been patiently (?) waiting our turn to get a new system implemented. While there will be some growing pains associated with implementing a new system, our start up cost will actually be less than the cost to fix our current system, AND we will all see a number of benefits as a result. We will be implementing a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) phone system around the agency, and while we did not originally plan to convert GVC so early in the project, we are going to move ahead with an anticipated date of next Friday, May 29.
With a VOIP system we will enjoy a number of benefits over our current set up, a few are:
- Direct Inward Dialing (DID) will go into effect, but you will have a new seven digit direct dial number so callers do not have to go through the switchboard.
- You can call other FCC numbers by using the new 4 digit extension and avoid having to dial (or remember!) all 7 or 10 digits! This system also eliminates long distance charges –whether you are calling an FCC number or any other number, no matter where it is.
- Most employees will receive a Wildix (the new phone company) app for their smart phone so it will eliminate a desk phone. The app will have the W logo from the front page. This will be particularly practical for those who do not routinely sit at a desk
- Those with the app will always have their work phone always handy – it will always be with you which is particularly handy for those who work in the community, spend time at other FCC locations, etc. The work number will have a different ring tone and can be turned off after hours
As part of this change many people will begin using their personal smart phone as their work phone, with desk phones going away. Along with that change, employees who use their personal phones will receive a monthly stipend of $10. The VOIP implementation will be installed at FSB and Hiawatha Hall in Winona, as well as Viroqua as the changeover works its way around.
Watch for more information in the next few days as the changeover approaches.
