New Feature: Program Spotlight

We are starting a new feature on the Depot called Program Spotlight. The agency has so many programs that we figured a monthly article about a given program is a good way to help you know more about the work we do. We will try to make the programs shorter versus longer, and of course include some pictures. And, as always, if you still have questions about the program, staff or clients, feel free to ask your supervisor or Director. We are kicking things off with a story about The Other Door in Viroqua.

The Other Door began in the fall of 2013 when around 10 community people approached FCC about a need in town and asked them to start a drop in center. The local people suggested a place for adults in recovery to meet, get to know others, and develop a sense of group belonging. Most importantly it needed to be free for participants, and this would be a big factor in influencing the group to come together regularly.

There was basement space at the Viroqua office that was repurposed, and initially just having a space to meet was important to starting things up. With a kick start from  Viroqua United Way Venture Grant of $500 more furnishings were accumulated, and a range of important equipment was added. Their inventory increased over time, and you will now find everything from library materials to musical instruments to craft supplies –many things that can inspire creativity and togetherness for participants. And they also have some just plain fun stuff like Wii, ping pong and foosball!

Today the Other Door is still consumer-run. The only criteria for those wishing to participate is a willingness to self-identify as being in recovery.  In addition to the fun stuff they have on hand, there is a range of formal group meetings – Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Chronic Illness workshops, Women in Recovery, and so on. They even have a planned meal for anyone to attend on Friday evening!

The Other Door drop in center is open Monday through Thursday from 4 – 8, Fridays from 430 to 830, with various hours on the weekends hosted by volunteers. The program relies on 4 part time peer staff as well as 4 volunteers. It averages around 60 new people each quarter, and while clients are not required to sign in, they manage to track about 5,000 “footsteps” each year.  Many of the attendees are from Viroqua, but the neighboring towns also supply some clients. The drop in center is a valuable service in the community, and it continues to receive financial help from other stakeholder organizations nearby. The Other Door is a great example of FCC meeting a local need.

The program would not be complete without a well-equipped library, and The Other Door is no exception.
