WHEN PERSONALITIES CLASH AT WORK

Every work setting has diverse personalities in its employees, as well as different values or belief systems.  With such variety, personality clashes will sometimes occur.  Here are some ideas to keep in mind if you are experiencing a “personality clash.”

  • Focus on your work. Avoid giving negative attention to the differences between you and your coworkers.
  • Put thought into the positive strengths you see in this coworker. He or she is contributing something.
  • Allow yourself space and distance from this coworker when needed. When you must interact, ignore the statements or behaviors you feel frustrated by.
  • Recognize that people can and do change. Be open to recognizing growth when it occurs.

If you are struggling with a personality clash at work, consider calling Gundersen Health’s Employee Assistance Program.  An EAP Consultant can discuss strategies which may be helpful in dealing with the situation.  EAP is a free benefit provided by Family & Children’s Center and can be reached at 608-775-4780 or 1-800-327-9991.  Visit our web site at www.gundersenhealth.org/eap
