According to Laura Poe, Registered Dietitian, shopping for healthy and cost effective food item choices isn’t always easy. Store layouts and labels are tricky at times.  Consider these tips when rolling your cart down the aisle next time.

  1. Shop the edges of the store for the bulk of your items
  2. When shopping the inner aisles, read labels to avoid certain ingredients
  3. Save money and avoid preservatives when possible
  4. Frozen fruits and vegetables can be cost-effective
  5. Look for healthy fats
  6. Purchase meat with skin and bones
  7. Choose a wide variety in colors for your foods
  8. Read labels
  9. Decrease soda
  10. Watch for the “dirty dozen” and “clean 15”
