Destination: Innovation

FCC Staff are innovating every day!  Read on for stories about creative solutions in our Winona location:

  • In Adolescent Day Treatment, the kids were having a difficult time understanding the different percentages listed on their scoring sheets.  In order to build a better understanding of the percentage of daily points that the child gets, the team created a color system.  If the kiddo has a great day they are having a blue day (based on their percentage), the next level down is green, then yellow, then orange, and finally red.  Now when the kids ask about their scores for the day they ask what color they are on the continuum, leading to better understanding.
  • In Elementary Day Treatment, a reward system is set up for the kids in which they can earn stickers to trade in for prizes.  The staff noticed that the idea of earning something to get something later was not motivating the kiddos.  So they came up with the idea of an instant reward for positive behaviors.  When a child does exceptionally well on a task or makes a positive choice in a situation, the staff will give them one M&M reinforcing the positive behavior and giving the instant reward of chocolate!
  • For another project the team wanted to plant some vegetables seeds to watch them grow.  Instead of planting them in jars, they planted them in the fingers of a clear glove.  That way the kids not only get to see the plant when it grows out of the soil, they also get to see the roots and the beginnings of the plant.

Great job to all the employees involved in these innovative ideas!
